The Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley welcomes applications for a postdoctoral scholar to support a project on radiation detection for nuclear security applications. The goal of this work, in collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley and Sandia National Laboratories, is to develop an advanced compact neutron imager for localization and characterization of special nuclear material. Work will be performed at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Sandia National Laboratories California site.
The Nuclear Engineering Department seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar employee, in the area of Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or in a closely related field, at 100% time. The candidate will perform work under the supervision of Dr. Bethany Goldblum.
This is a full-time, one-year position and the appointment is renewable for a second year depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Anticipated start date is January 2018.
The candidate will contribute through software and hardware development for the localization and imaging of radiation emitting materials. The work encompasses laboratory experiments and testing of devices for specific applications; scintillator characterization and light yield measurements; modeling and simulation of neutron/gamma localizers and imagers; and algorithm development for particle identification and image reconstruction.
• The completion of all PhD degree requirements except the dissertation at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications (by start date):
• Must have a PhD or equivalent degree in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or other closely related discipline
• Experience with aspects of gamma and/or neutron radiation detection hardware, data acquisition, data analysis, or simulation; may be in the context of physics instrumentation or applied R&D
• Demonstrated creativity and highly developed problem solving skills
• Superior academic achievement and publication record
• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills and teamwork
• Demonstrated proficiency with scintillator detectors and nuclear instrumentation
• Experience with nuclear physics data analysis (e.g., ROOT)
• Demonstrated proficiency in Monte Carlo based radiation transport codes (e.g., GEANT4)
• Demonstrated experience in design optimization of radiation detectors and imaging systems
The full-time annual salary will be $55,000 – $69,000.
