The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory has published the second edition of Deterring Nuclear Proliferation: The Importance of IAEA Safeguards. Written by a team of nuclear nonproliferation and international security experts, the textbook provides a history of the origins of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and an introduction to the ways in which IAEA verifies nation states’ nuclear nonproliferation commitments. The new edition describes important changes to the implementation of IAEA safeguards since the first edition was published in 2013 and documents the IAEA’s verification role in Iran.

More detailed information about the second edition and praise for the book by leaders engaged in efforts to ensure the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons can be found in the full-length press release (https://www.bnl.gov/newsroom/news.php?a=114372&m=1).

A pre-release version of the book is available for download (https://www.bnl.gov/NNS/IAEAtextbook.php?m=1) as a free e-book by individuals with .gov and .edu email addresses.
